Implant-Support Dentures

implant denture review at creekside

Instead of removable dentures, patients have the choice of permanent implant-supported dentures. This type of tooth replacement stays in place for a secure, convenient restorative solution to missing teeth.

If it fits your needs and goals, we can secure dentures with implants at Creekside Family Dental.

What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

This restorative dentistry option creates permanent replacement teeth from dentures instead of being removable like a regular denture. Regular removable prosthetic devices include the crown part of the tooth attached to a false gum. Implant-supported dentures include these components as well as a replacement to the tooth roots, making the dentures secure and permanently in place.

How Are Implant-Supported Dentures Put In?

This treatment requires surgery, yet it provides a long-term solution. Our dentist inserts the dental implants, which are titanium screws, through the gums and into the jawbone. After this surgery, there is a healing time, during which the jawbone grows to fuse with the implant and hold it permanently in place. We provide a temporary tooth solution while you’re waiting for the implants to fully heal.

Our dentist, Dr. Will Leffler, may vary the placement and number of implants depending on your case, but a full arch denture doesn’t require an implant for each tooth. Instead, we can generally use two to six to hold the full denture, which minimizes the areas involved in the surgery.

To create the denture, our office uses a high-tech scanner to scan your mouth rather than relying on the old-fashioned method of taking impressions. We gain precise digital imaging of your mouth that is used for a lab to create your custom denture.

Once the implants are healed and the denture is made, we complete the process. While implants can hold crowns or a bridge as the tooth replacement portion, in this case we attach a full denture to the implants. Dr. Leffler uses connecting pieces known as abutments to attach the dentures to the implants.

Why Should I Choose Implant-Supported Dentures?

This treatment solution offers a full arch of teeth that stays permanently in place. If you are missing all of your teeth, this is a viable solution, whereas a bridge only helps when one to a few teeth are gone.

This restoration option also has clear benefits compared to removable dentures. With dentures supported by implants, your teeth function like natural teeth, with the stability that comes with them. You no longer remove your dentures but instead clean them inside your mouth. You may also find it easier to eat foods that were off-limits with removable dentures.

Another important benefit of this type of denture is that it helps to maintain the structure of the jawbone and the face, which can deteriorate and lose their shape after tooth loss and even while wearing removable dentures. The replacement tooth roots and the normal pressure from chewing you can get through permanent teeth helps to support and maintain the bone of the face.

Nonetheless, it’s important to consider that this type of tooth restoration involves surgery. You need to have healthy gums and jawbones, and not everyone is a candidate. Our dentist can discuss the different tooth replacement options with you and see if implant-supported dentures make the most sense. He gives you all the information you need to make this important decision.
