As part of your exam, the doctor and hygienist will perform an oral cancer screening. This involves a thorough check of your gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, roof of the mouth, and back of the throat. We will also check for swollen lymph nodes and glands under your chin and in your neck. Some of the major risk factors for abnormal oral lesions or oral cancer are use of tobacco products, alcohol, and the Human papillomavirus (HPV). We will alert you if we see any areas of concern.
